Writing persuasive letters was an opportunity to consider audience as well as how to combine opinion and fact. Because the class wrote to each other in a personal manner, they didn't include the sources of their facts. However, they were asked to verify them and did. We talked about how writing letters to decision makers such as state or federal representatives or even letters to the editor would require stating of sources. The class did get an opportunity to email state representatives about Susie's Law, which which increase penalties for animal abuse. In that case, they added their personal opinions to a fact-based letter written and researched by NC Voters for Animal Welfare.
Dear Class,
KABOOOOM! People dying. Children screaming. That’s what’s happens when a bomb hits during a war. I think we should focus on world peace for these reasons: World peace solves all the stuff that’s on the sheet except hunger and cancer. World peace would save a lot of lives including animal lives where the bombs go off. If there’s world peace people might focus on more important stuff like hunger and cancer. World peace would help animals. World peace would help the recession because we wouldn’t spend so much money on wars. We spend three billion dollars on the Iraq war every year. I feel both world peace and preventing animal cruelty are equally important. If we work on world peace, we can help with animal cruelty, too. ********************************* Dear class,
Imagine if you were one of the young men and women sent seven and a-half thousand miles from the U.S. to face horrible deaths in Iraq. 4366 U.S. soldiers were killed during the war in Iraq. On September 11 2009, an Iraq bomb killed 4 U.S. soldiers. The killing was the deadliest day for American troops in weeks. October has always been the bloodiest month for the U.S forces since they invaded Iraq eight years ago. Also, 60 million people were killed in World War II. If there were world peace, bombs would not be killing innocent people because the world would be a better place. The world would be a better place because the army would not be fighting. When people die it is really sad. Towns in Iraq have been getting unsafe for kids our age. Imagine not having enough supplies to learn because of war Every kid has a right to learn. I hope you will help to make a better world. Dear Class,
When my dad and I were driving downtown, I saw a billboard about the people who died in the war in Iraq. So far, there have been over 200,000 deaths in the Iraq war and 270,000 people seriously injured. WORLD PEACE IS AWESOME. And I can prove it! World peace will help solve many global problems. It will help solve global warming by tanks and air force fighter planes not using a lot of gas. Did you know that the military is one of the top users of fossil fuels? The U.S.A. will spend 1.5 trillion dollars on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan by February of 2012. All of the money we spend on war could be spent on health care, education and food for the poor. Families are getting broken apart because of wars. So far, American deaths in the Iraq are over 4,000 and in the Afghanistan war over 1,000 Americans have died. So far there have been 15 wars since 1945, THOSE WARS SHOULD HAVE NOT HAPPENED!! As you see, world peace might fix some problems. So I hope you want to have world peace! Dear Class,
60 million people died in World War II! That’s 10 million per a year! I believe we should focus on world peace for the following reasons: 500 people die of war every day. That’s 182,500 a year! Those deaths should not happen. There are too many deaths because of war. People should not die this way. They are dying in a war zone not where I want to die. World peace is important in this world. World peace is needed. Go world peace! |
Dear Class,
Picture a family eating breakfast as they wait for their son or daughter to come home from the war. They’re not sure he or she will come home. It would feel like a big hole in the family if their son or daughter was killed. I believe we should work on world peace for the following reasons. I want the world to be in peace because I don’t want my own family members to go to war. People are dying in wars and his or her family wants them to come home. It’s better to be injured than dead but it would make your life harder. More injured troops are surviving the war in Iraq than in any other. But because of the terrible force of IED( an IED is a powerful explosive that can kill hundreds of people), more people are surviving with brain injury than in any other war. More than 500 people die in the wars everyday in the world. I think our class should work on world peace. We should make change so we don’t have to go to war. Dear Class,
I believe we should focus on world peace for the following reasons:Think of all the people in Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia and many other places where war has been going on for years. The people who live there can’t get out of their houses to get food and water, farm or go to work because there is a war going on. There are children who cannot go outside to play or go to school because it is not safe. Some kids have grown up to be 31 years old and have not been alive 1 day without being in war. If we had world peace, men and women could come home from fighting to be with family and friends. Parents have to leave their kids for 12 months at the least, sometimes 16, 20 or 24 months to fight, then come back for maybe 2 months, then go back to war! If there was world peace it would stop the Iraq war because we would agree not to fight. If we had world peace there would not be as many wars about people’s differences because we would be nice to each other. In Somalia, they are fighting because the people belong to different tribes and they don’t trust one another. They argue till they try to kill each other. The same racist feelings have led to war being fought right now in Sudan, Uganda and Zimbabwe but Africa is not the only continent that has racial wars. Nearly every war has been due to race or customs or religion. My friend’s granddad almost got bombed in a war. I feel sad for the families who lost people they love in a war. I think we should focus on world peace because that would solve many problems. Please help so we can save the world from war! ************************************************* Dear class,
I think that we should work on world peace. My grandpa was in the military. He was sent to war many times, and nearly died. He even had a wife and two children and he was not there lots of times to support his family through hard times. That is not peaceful. If we were to work on world peace, lots more people in the wars could go home to celebrate holidays. Also, lots more lives would be saved as far as hunger, because the world is still not very peaceful with people on the streets begging for food. Animal cruelty is not making the world peaceful either, or hunger, war and any of the other stuff on the chart. My opinion is that we should all live a good life. I think we should have a peaceful world, not a fighting, starving cruel world. Please let it happen. |
